What are Windows errors?

A Windows error is an error that happens when an unexpected condition occurs or when a desired operation has failed. When you have an error in Windows -- whether it's Windows 7, Windows XP or Windows Vista -- it may be critical and cause your programs to freeze and crash or it may be seemingly harmless yet annoying. Left unchecked, your system will become increasingly unstable, run more slowly and crash more frequently. You may be left unable to run programs at all.

The procedures necessary to correct Windows errors differ from one case to another. You could try a do it yourself or DIY method to fix Windows errors. This requires that you research the exact error message that's listed on the error pop-up window. But what if it's a virus causing this Windows error? Or what if your search doesn't turn up any fixes? If you manage to find the fix, it's something best done by professional technicians or a professional Windows Repair program.

Blue Screens AKA Blue Screen of Death

A stop error screen or bug check screen, commonly called a Blue Screen of Death (also BSoD, bluescreen), is caused by a fatal system error and is the error screen displayed by the Microsoft Windows family of Operating Systems upon encountering a critical error, of a non-recoverable nature, that causes the system to 'crash.' Stop errors are usually hardware or driver related, causing the computer to stop responding. Bluescreens are typically caused by unsuspected software errors in device drivers.

How to fix Blue Screen of Death?

You could try a do it yourself or DIY method to fix Blue Screen errors. This requires that you research the exact error message that's listed on the Blue Screen. DLL Errors

A DLL error is the most common Windows error. You've likely had a message pop up, at least once or twice, informing you that a DLL error has occurred. If you're like a lot of people, you probably shut your computer down and rebooted, hoping the problem had gone away. But, what exactly is a DLL error, and how does it affect your computer?

DLL stands for Dynamic Link Library. Essentially, a DLL file is a necessary component of a particular program or application. Without that DLL file, the program or application cannot run properly. Some DLL files are shared by numerous programs, and if a particular DLL file becomes corrupted or is accidentally deleted, it could wreak havoc on how those programs, that are associated with it, are run.

Missing DLL - this means that a call has been made by an application for a particular DLL. However, that DLL could not be found. In some cases this means that the DLL file in questions cannot be found on your system. However, when a DLL is called, the application must provide a path to that library.

A missing DLL error can occur in cases where the actual DLL name does not match the name of the DLL being called. It may also mean that the path being called does not match the actual path of the existing DLL. The DLL may be on your system, but it is possible that it could have an incorrect name or be in the incorrect location. This could be an error with the DLL itself or with the coding of the application causing the error.

Corrupt DLL - a DLL, like any other file or folder on your computer, can become corrupt. They become corrupt for one of a number of reasons. Spyware or virus infections can certainly lead to a number of important files on your system becoming corrupt. If you have manually attempted to alter the contents of a file, then this too can lead to a corruption. An interrupted installation or even an interrupted execution of the DLL may also lead to a corrupt DLL error message.

Advanced System Repair Pro and Windows DLL Errors

Sure, you can spend countless hours trying to figure out how to repair your DLL error but wouldn't it save time to have an automatic program do it?

  • Advanced System Repair Pro will replace your missing/damaged DLL files with fresh, clean and up-to-date ones
  • Advanced System Repair Pro will replace ALL DLL files* that are missing and/or damaged - Even those you don't know about!

Freezing Computer

Computer hanging or freezing occurs when either a program or the whole Operating System ceases to respond to inputs. In the most commonly encountered scenario, a program freezes and all windows belonging to the frozen program become static, and though the mouse cursor still moves on the screen, neither typing on the keyboard nor clicking the mouse produces any effect in the program's windows. The mouse cursor may also be stuck in a form indicating that it is waiting for some operation to complete, such as an hourglass or a spinning wait cursor. Almost always, the only way to recover from a system freeze is to reboot the machine, usually by power cycling with an on/off or reset button.

What Causes my Windows to Freeze?

29287

The most common but least severe cause of your computer screen freezing is when your system is using all RAM (memory) available - at that particular moment. If so, you've got a hardware problem. Our free Advanced System Repair Pro scan can tell you how your PC's RAM compares to a worldwide average. Find out how your PC's hardware ranks, in under 5 minutes.

How to Fix 'Computer Screen Freeze'

Simple Fixes

  • This problem might be temporary. Wait a few moments to see if everything starts functioning again.
  • Either increase your RAM or start closing programs that are running in the foreground and background of your computer that you don't need. Follow the following steps:
    1. Press the 'Alt', 'Ctrl' and 'Del' buttons all at the same time, and you should bring up Windows Task Manager.
    2. See if any programs show up in the 'Applications' window as not being responsive.
    3. If anything shows, highlight it and click 'End Task'.
    4. Wait a few seconds, and the non-responsive programs should shut down.

More Complicated Fixes

If the problem isn't a purely short term, temporary one, then it's something more serious.

  • Fire up your trusty anti-virus program and run a full virus scan now. If you don't have anti-virus software already, you can download the program from MacAfee, or use Advanced System Repair Pro's free scan to diagnose malware.

Virus Damage

Once your computer has been infected with a virus, it's no longer the same. After removing it with your anti-virus software, you're often left with lingering side-effects. The symptoms vary, but the bottom line is the same: Your computer doesn't work the way it used to. Your favorite programs crash frequently, your registry entries are a mess and even your wallpaper is mysteriously missing.

Why did this happen? You've already removed the virus. Shouldn't the havoc it caused go away, along with it? What about the damage caused to your system? Isn't it simply erased, along with the malware that caused it?

Technically, your computer might no longer be infected, but that doesn't mean it's error-free. Simple removing a virus can actually harm your system.

Invisible Virus Damage

Many Trojans and viruses do not advertise their presence on your computer. Viruses can surreptitiously infiltrate your PC, and both the files and the system will remain operable. Trojans can hide themselves in and secretly corrupt your PC without you suspecting anything is wrong.

This is the reason an antivirus program is so essential.

Anti-virus Programs and Advanced System Repair Pro

Advanced System Repair Pro is a complementary solution to your anti-virus software. Your anti-virus software is there to detect new threats, terminate them and constantly protect your PC while Advanced System Repair Pro is there to heal the damage these viruses have already caused.

That's why a full system scan of your entire hard drive with a good anti-virus program is always recommended after a Advanced System Repair Prorepair.

Below is a list of troubleshooting steps to resolve your Error 29287 problems. These troubleshooting steps get progressively more difficult and time consuming, so we strongly recommend attempting them in ascending order to avoid unnecessary time and effort.

Please Note: Click the [ ] image to expand the troubleshooting instructions for each step below. You can also click the [ ] image to hide the instructions as you proceed through each step.

Step 1: Repair Registry Entries Associated with Error 29287

Manually editing the Windows registry to remove invalid Error 29287 keys is not recommended unless you are PC service professional. Incorrectly editing your registry can stop your PC from functioning and create irreversible damage to your operating system. In fact, one misplaced comma can prevent your PC from booting entirely!

Because of this risk, we recommend using a registry cleaner to assist with this process. Using a registry cleaner automates the process of finding invalid registry entries, missing file references (like the one causing your Sophos Error 29287 error), and broken links within the registry. A backup is automatically created before each scan, with the ability to undo any changes in a single click, protecting you against the possibility of PC damage.

As a Microsoft Silver Partner, we provide software that can assist you in removing these issues:

Caution: Unless you an advanced PC user, we DO NOT recommend editing the Windows registry manually. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. We do not guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To manually repair your Windows registry, first you need to create a backup by exporting a portion of the registry related to Error 29287 (eg. Sophos Antivirus):

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Type 'command' in the search box.. DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
  3. While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
  4. You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
  5. Click Yes.
  6. A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
  7. Type 'regedit' and hit ENTER.
  8. In the Registry Editor, select the Error 29287-related key (eg. Sophos Antivirus) you want to back up.
  9. From the File menu, choose Export.
  10. In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Sophos Antivirus backup key.
  11. In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as 'Sophos Antivirus Backup'.
  12. In the Export Range box, be sure that 'Selected branch' is selected.
  13. Click Save.
  14. The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
  15. You now have a backup of your Sophos Antivirus-related registry entry.

The next steps in manually editing your registry will not be discussed in this article due to the high risk of damaging your system. If you would like to learn more about manual registry editing, please see the links below.

Step 2: Conduct a Full Malware Scan of Your PC

There is a chance that your 29287 error could be related to a malware infection on your PC. These malicious intruders can damage, corrupt, or even delete Runtime Errors-related files. Furthermore, there's a possibility that the 29287 error you are experiencing is related to a component of the malicious program itself.

Tip: If you do not already have a malware protection program installed, we highly recommend using Emsisoft Anti-Malware (download here). They offer a malware removal guarantee that is not offered by other security software.

Step 3: Clean Out Your System Junk (Temporary Files and Folders) With Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr)

Over time, your computer accumulates junk files from normal web surfing and computer use. If this junk isn't occasionally cleaned out, it can cause Sophos Antivirus to respond slowly or provides an 29287 error, possibly due to file conflicts or an overloaded hard drive. Cleaning up these temporary files with Disk Cleanup might not only solve your 29287 error, but can also dramatically speed up the performance of your PC.

Tip: Although Disk Cleanup is a wonderful built-in tool, it will not completely clean up all of the temporary files on your computer. Other programs that you frequently use such Microsoft Office, Firefox, Chrome, Live Messenger, and hundreds of other programs are not cleaned up with Disk Cleanup (including some Sophos Ltd. programs).

Because of the shortcomings of the Windows Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr) tool, we highly recommend using a specialized hard drive cleanup / privacy protection software to clean up your entire computer.

As a Microsoft Silver Partner, we provide software that can assist you in cleaning up your temporary files:

How to run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr) (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10):

  7. Type 'cleanmgr' and hit ENTER.
  8. Disk Cleanup will begin calculating how much occupied disk space you can reclaim.
  9. The Disk Cleanup dialog box will appear with series of checkboxes you can select. In most cases, the 'Temporary Files' category will occupy the most disk space.
  10. Check the boxes of the categories you want to clean and click OK.

Step 4: Update Your PC Device Drivers

29287 errors can be related to corrupt or outdated device drivers. Drivers can work one day, and suddenly stop working the next day, for a variety of reasons. The good news is that you can often update the device driver to fix the Error 29287 problem.

Finding the exact driver for your Error 29287-related hardware device can be extremely difficult, even directly on the Sophos Ltd. or related manufacturer's website. Even if you are experienced at finding, downloading, and manually updating drivers, the process can still be very time consuming and extremely irritating. Installing the wrong driver, or simply an incompatible version of the right driver, can make your problems even worse.

Because of the time and complexity involved in updating drivers, we highly recommend using a driver update software. A driver update tool ensures that you have correct driver versions for your hardware, and also creates a backup of your current drivers before making any changes. Maintaining a driver backup provides you with the security of knowing that you can rollback any driver to a previous version (if necessary).

As a Microsoft Silver Partner, we provide software that can assist you in updating these drivers:

Please Note: Your Error 29287 may not be related to hardware driver problems, but it's always a good idea to ensure all of your PC device drivers are up-to-date to maximize PC performance.

Step 5: Utilize Windows System Restore to 'Undo' Recent System Changes

Windows System Restore allows you to 'go back in time' with your PC to help fix your Error 29287 problems. System Restore can return your PC's system files and programs back to a time when everything was working fine. This can potentially help you avoid hours of troubleshooting headaches associated with 29287 errors.

Please Note: Using System Restore will not affect your documents, pictures, or other data.

To use System Restore (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10):

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. In the search box, type 'System Restore' and hit ENTER.
  3. In the results, click System Restore.
  4. Enter any administrator passwords (if prompted).
  5. Follow the steps in the Wizard to choose a restore point.
  6. Restore your computer.

Step 6: Uninstall and Reinstall the Sophos Antivirus Program Associated with Error 29287

  5. Click on the Sophos Antivirus-associated entry.
  6. Click the Remove button on the right side.
  7. Follow the on-screen directions to complete the uninstallation of your Error 29287-associated program.

Instructions for Windows 8:

  1. Hover the cursor in the bottom left of the screen to produce the Start Menu image.
  2. Right-Click to bring up the Start Context Menu.
  3. Click Programs and Features.
  4. Locate Sophos Error 29287-associated program (eg. Sophos Antivirus) under the Name column.
  5. Click on the Sophos Antivirus-associated entry.
  6. Click the Uninstall/Change on the top menu ribbon.
  7. Follow the on-screen directions to complete the uninstallation of your Error 29287-associated program.

After you have successfully uninstalled your Error 29287-associated program (eg. Sophos Antivirus), reinstall the program according to the Sophos Ltd. instructions.

Tip: If you are positive that your 29287 error is related to a specific Sophos Ltd. program, uninstalling and reinstalling your Error 29287-related program will likely be the solution to your problem.

Step 7: Run Windows System File Checker ('sfc /scannow')

System File Checker is a handy tool included with Windows that allows you scan for and restore corruptions in Windows system files (including those related to Error 29287).

To run System File Checker (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10):

  7. Type 'sfc /scannow' and hit ENTER.
  8. System File Checker will begin scanning for Error 29287 and other system file problems (be patient - the system scan may take a while).
  9. Follow the on-screen commands.

Step 8: Install All Available Windows Updates

Microsoft is constantly updating and improving Windows system files that could be associated with Error 29287. Sometimes resolving your Runtime Errors problems may be as simple as updating Windows with the latest Service Pack or other patch that Microsoft releases on an ongoing basis.

To check for Windows Updates (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10):

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Type 'update' into the search box and hit ENTER.
  3. The Windows Update dialog box will appear.
  4. If updates are available, click the Install Updates button.

Step 9: Perform a Clean Installation of Windows

Caution: We must emphasize that reinstalling Windows will be a very time-consuming and advanced task to resolve Error 29287 problems. To avoid data loss, you must be sure that you have backed-up all of your important documents, pictures, software installers, and other personal data before beginning the process. If you are not currently backing up your data, you need to do so immediately (download a highly-recommended backup solution [MyPCBackup.com Download]) to protect yourself from permanent data loss.

This step is your final option in trying to resolve your Error 29287 issue. Reinstalling Windows will erase everything from your hard drive, allowing you to start again with a fresh system. Furthermore, a clean install of Windows will also quickly clean out any and all 'junk' that has accumulated over the normal usage of your computer.

Please Note: If 29287 errors still persist after a clean install of Windows, your Runtime Errors problem MUST be hardware related. If that is the case, then it is likely you will need to replace the associated hardware causing the 29287 error.
